Organic Vs Conventional

There are strict guidelines around what farming practices earn the "organic" label.

What may be used on a conventional farm?

  • An assortment of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, and growth enhancers can be used to stimulate soil and crops. When the soil is found lacking in various nutrients, they might be added through the use of synthetic fertilizers.
  • The focus is often on short-term yield increases rather than long-term soil health.
  • Crops may be grown from genetically modified seeds.
  • Pesticides or fungicides may be used to control insects in crop storage and transportation.
  • Conventional farmers are not generally required to keep records of their production practices or agree to third-party inspections.
In contrast, organic farming focuses on proactive practices that prevent soil depletion, water pollution, infested crops, and sick animals.

Organic farmers must:

  • Replenish and maintain soil fertility.
  • Eliminate the use of toxic and persistent chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Restore, maintain, and enhance ecological harmony.
  • Build and support biologically diverse agriculture.
  • Maintain records verifying their practices and products.

Health Benifits of Clove

Did you know this little spice has many therapeutic properties?
It is mainly used as table spice in our cooking. Usually I don't add clove to tea but had a chance of tasting it and it was really good. Have you tried it?

Try adding a clove, tiny piece of cinnamon and a cardamom pounded as a spice blend while making your regular tea.Do try and let me know.

Bhogi Wishes

“Smokeless bhogi – Healthier pongal “

On the day of bhogi people will make a bonfire in the evening. The reason for bonfire in olden days was to burn agricultural wastes and firewood to keep warm during the winter and to recycle the farm wastes to make natural manure.

But nowadays people burn plastic, rubber, tires and non-degradable materials causing environmental pollution and thus a health hazard. Lets celebrate a smokeless bhoghi by burning only agricultural waste or wood and be kind to the environment.

Happy Bhogi, everyone!

Whats so special about going Organic…

Years back when I heard the word “Organic”….I thought that’s a part of rich people’s life style and ignored it. Couple of years later when there came a time I realized “You are what you eat”, took few baby steps into organic world.

In general terms, Organic food is typically grown in traditionally suitable lands without using harmful pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products are not given any antibiotics or growth hormones.

Here are few facts about Organic Food

  • The average non organic produce contains more than 20 pesticides.
  • Organic food has more vitamins, minerals and fiber and retains the nutrient level for longer period.
  • Your body becomes more resistant to disease as it will have higher levels of the essential nutrients needed to fight the infection.
  • You will have more energy level because of consuming lower levels of toxins and chemicals which slows your body down.
  • Organic food producers must meet stringent standards.
  • Organic farms respect our water resources and do not leach nitrogen and other pollutants from their soil.
  • Organic food just tastes much better.
